The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) on July 30, 2026, issued the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Insurance Intermediaries) (Amendment) Regulations, 2026, further to amend the IRDAI (Registration of Corporate Agents) Regulations, 2015, IRDAI (Insurance Brokers) Regulations, 2018, IRDAI (Registration of Insurance Marketing Firm) Regulations, 2015, IRDAI (Insurance Web Aggregators) Regulations, 2017, and IRDAI (Insurance Services by Common Public Service Centers) Regulations, 2019.
The following have been amended, namely:
• The amendments replace the earlier system of periodic renewal of registration with a system of continuous registration, subject to payment of an annual fee and continued compliance with IRDAI regulations. Existing Corporate Agents and Insurance Brokers holding three-year registration certificates are required to obtain new registration certificates by January 31, 2027, with a grace period until March 31, 2027, on payment of an additional fee.
• The regulations also strengthen governance by introducing mandatory annual fee payments, stricter record-keeping and policy solicitation tagging requirements, enhanced training obligations for Principal Officers and Designated Persons, compulsory enrolment letters for designated sales personnel, and an NOC mechanism for transfer of designated persons between intermediaries.
• Further, they require greater disclosures from certain intermediaries, mandate professional indemnity insurance for eligible Corporate Agents, revise the fee structure, and empower IRDAI with stronger supervisory and enforcement powers to improve transparency, accountability, and protection of policyholders' interests.
